13 Ways to Handle Lunging Off Leash Doggos and Protect Your Pupper

Unleashed doggos are a problem no matter where you go. Sure, leash laws do vary, but all in all they are meant to keep canines on the leash until in an appropriate area. In which they are still expected to maintain some sort of decorum. But we all know that those laws do little to stop pawrents irresponsibly letting their dogs roam free and so we made this list with the help of protective pawrents who have had a tackle or two with a loose doggo and lived to tell the tale.

With a problem like this it is only reasonable that a pawrent would turn to Reddit's r/DogAdvice subreddit to learn from other pupper pawrents who have had first hand experience with taking on tumultuous doggos. Sadly, the problem of dogs running free in places they should not be is one that seemingly has no end in sight and one which has claimed the lives of far too many doggos and even some pawrents. So instead of hoping that you will never be unlucky enough to come face to snout with a seriously scary doggo, we figured it would be better to give you an idea of how to pawtect yourself and your pupper in the case that things go south.

I have collected a range of options to show you the depth and breadth of how you can choose to handle yourself, from non-physical options such as shouting techniques, all the way to 15,000 volts of shocking 'fun' shall we say. It is hard to draw the line when it comes to your dog's and your own safety but depending on how real and repetitive this danger is in your life there will be an option to suit you. So stop worrying about whether you might meet a massive off leash dog on your next walk and instead walk with confidence knowing what you need to do in the rare chance you will meet them.

    [dele... If you don't want to carry mace, what about one of those air horns? Or carry something like an umbrella to swing around before the dog gets close. Unless they are charging at you, I also yell in a deep voice "NO! Get away!" and lunge make myself big, they usually back off.

    Apprehensive-Bit7903 Top 1% Commenter Not tried by me, but saw as advice on another post is to bring an extra leash and spin it to create a barrier. A strong "STOP" has helped me a ton. I've had my fair share of offleash dogs and commanding them has worked most times except the one I didnt see until it's mouth was basically on my leg.

    Toe_Jam_is_my_Jam I finally just find areas out further to walk my dogs. The trails in town are too full of people and dogs ..one off leash is too many.

    [deleted] The park along the river where I sometime walk my Golden Retriever has a bunch of homeless types all with pitbulls off leash, of course. I carry a cattle pr d I got from Amazon. It's about 3 feet long with prongs at the end. It's 15,000 volts. I've only been challenged by one dog and when I raised it towards him he left.

  • Well, these are some unique options. I think that I can say from the perspective of not immediately being comfortable with harming animals, yelling stop and making yourself big and intimidating would be the best option. However, knowing that there are pawrents who do not care to train and culture their canines, the chance of something physical happening is not off the table. So I can understand why people would resort to such options, at least this option above is designed to be used in close quarters when things are pretty much past the point of return. Mace just seems excessive and could potentially hurt your own pupper, same goes for the airhorn.

    sahara654 I usually move in on the off leash dog that and give it a very firm "No!" and in my situations, it's enough to stop the dog and make it think twice. I dealt with this just yesterday and the dog retreated immediately. I'm not exactly intimidating at 5'2 either.

    coalman606 If you have something hard and weighted at the end of your leash you can hold your dog close and then spin the other end around fast like a propellar and other dogs will keep their space. I wouldn't use mace or an airhorn because that could scare or injure your dog

    bikeonychus Walking stick (I generally need one anyway). Use it to push away a charging dog, or to separate it from your dog by creating a barrier. Often just threatening with the stick over your head is enough to make some dogs think twice. Some dogs will also automatically bite the stick, distracting it from your dog. If there is a danger to your life, you can flip the stick round and the handle end is a little heavier - I have not had to do this with a dog, but I've also never been bitten by

    MotherofaPickle Bear spray. Mine's attached to my leash so I can grab it quickly. Funny, though, the only times I've had to pull it out was when I was walking with my kids and off-leash dogs charged us. Haven't had to use it yet, thankfully.

    shortnsweet33 We carry a spare slip lead. Most people who lackadaisically stroll over when their dog charges you will pick up the pace when you leash their dog. Drives me mad.

  • Now, this is some top level training right here. Not only teaching the dog their place in society and stopping them from daring to step to a hooman, but also training their pawrents that unless they want other people to negate their belief that their dog deserves to roam leash free, they had better train that dog to stick close to them and not approach others aggressively. Honesty, who would have thought that putting a leash on an unleash pup could make a pawrent so mad from so far away. Top work with this one, truly.

    Sharp_Following5753 Because of this, I do all of my walks with a hiking pole. To a passerby it looks like maybe I have a balance issue or perhaps I'm super hardcore (not LOL) but the reality is that it gives me a way of putting about 3' of space between a loose dog and my dog by simply putting it out in front of us. Gives me some peace of mind and a few extra seconds to sort out my plan when I see a loose dog charging our way.

    sequestuary Get a break stick, know how to use it, and carry it with you every time. If all else fails and another dog latches onto yours and won't let go, that's when you use it.

    DualCitizen With Dogs Being prepared is most of the battle. Practicing how you will react so it is rote is important. I keep dog mace on my pouch, dangling. My left arm pops my pouch buckle while my right hand grabs the mace container so my pouch can dangle. My left hand pulls the dog behind me. Right hand points the mace. It takes me 1.5 seconds max.
